In mid 1951 the UN forces pushed the Chinese and the North Korean forces across the 38th parallel. The war split up into a lot of small battles and they all had different objectives. In November 1951, the peace negotiations began. Armistice wasn't signed until July 1953. The Korean war marked a significant turning point in the Cold War. The war helped to expand the cold war into Asia.
What did the war achieve? The war stopped the spread of communism in Korea. The battle line between the two sides became the new border between the North and the South. A demilitarized zone separated the different sides.
BEFORE : - US liked to use political pressure and economic aid to contain the communism
AFTER : - Military backup - US became more involved with Asia militarily - Over 33,600 American soldiers died in action - About 2,800 died from accidents or disease during war - Defense agreements were signed with: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia - American aid started going to the French forces that were fighting against communism in Vietnam - Convinced Eisenhower that the U.S could not contain communism by fighting a series of small wars - Created the massive retaliation policy: a policy of threatening a massive response, including the use of nuclear weapons, against a communist state trying to seize a peaceful state by force.
